Where have you been?

“Where have you been?”

That’s the question my blogged asked me when I logged into wordpress after ages. It’s right. It has been a while. And I have neglected you too long.

I’ve been busy my friend. I have now pursed a career that actually challenges me. No more learning the system and then beating it at its own game. My new career constantly challenges me in every aspect on a day to day basis, whether it be from my side or from the clients side. But I still love it. Not as much as I miss writing.

I found companionship, and was happy. I lost companionship and I was happier. Its a complicated process that involved what the mortals of this realm call “feelings.” Its a touchy topic that caused the heart to beat faster and the blood to grow harder.

I have decided to spoil myself as well. Owning a large array of clothes and electronics that you have not seen before. It’s a sudden yearn that creates this purchasing instinct that results in flies flying out of my wallet. Speaking of wallets, I got a new one. Brown to remind myself I’m getting old.

I shall visit you again my friend. I plan on removing the wordpress title on your name, to show your independence to the world.  And we shall talk about the journey that I am on now. To find the real me in this little island of ours.

Pass it On

The latest item to take Sri Lankan social media by storm is the product of responsible thinking and the need to make an attitude change in the people of our nation and abroad. Created by Subhash Pinnapola and team at Leo Burnet Sri Lanka, they reveal to the rest of the country the importance of sight and the duty we have to donate our organs after we pass on.

The “virus” was a video clip just over 2 minutes titled “Pass it on when your done with it.” The video was hosted on Youtube the popular video sharing website and word of it was spread like wildfire through social media channels Facebook and Twitter. The mass response and spread starts from the catchy title, to the amazing production, to the deep message embedded in the video.
When I watched this video I was deeply touched. I have been aware of the donation of eyes after death to blind patients, but never has it affected me so much. I’ve donated blood numerous times. But something like my eyes after my death, the thought has never occurred to me. It saddens me even more seeing how I cannot donate my eyes due to a history of Glaucoma in my family.

Responsible advertising is something one rarely sees in Sri Lanka. Many agencies have tried but have never made an impact the way Subash has with his campaign. In Sri Lanka Advertising has mostly been about PROMOTING the product. The difference between Traditional Advertising and Responsible Advertising, is where you make the public AWARE of an issue that is right in front of them. Blindness is an age old ailment and the donation of eyes is not something that most people are aware of.

The step Subash has taken to educate the world on the donation of eyes is worthy of recognition everywhere possible. With the channels that have been chosen there is no stopping how far this video clip will go.

The facebook page for the campaign can be found here.

Jaffna

Its 1.40 I’m on the A12 the road that according to Google Maps leads to Trincomalee. I’m in one of those large latha bus’ on the way to Jaffna.
It all started when my sister was asked to go cover the event on behalf of the newspaper she works for.
The event being the Jaffna Music Festival.
She obviously asked me to come along and I was more than happy to join her a day later. My parents, having nothing better to do decided to go on their own on the same day my sister leaves.

After finishing work on Friday I got together with 3 friends and am heading to Jaffna to attend this music festival. The AC in the bus is so cold my friend has dificulty breathing. They really push the AC part in the brochure.

Hopefully we’ll end up in Jaffna by morning. Till then visit http://www.jaffnamusicfestival.org for more details!

Facebook Future

I was playing with R’s Samsung Galaxy S the other day and I was amazed at the new Android Contact Book. Google who can’t do anything without linking it all together has linked the Contact Book on your Android phone with Facebook™ as well as Twitter™.

The first thing it does is imports all your Facebook contacts onto your phone. This includes their pictures and what ever information such as phone and email address. Its both a win and lose situation. Win being that you now have all your contacts on your phone without having to add them. Lose being you have too many contacts including the ones your can’t call.

Facebook is taking over. Its as simple as that. Facebook is valued at over $50 billion and has changed the world since Bill Gates created Microsoft and Windows.

Do we need an e-mail address?
Email Addresses are used more as passports or access cards to websites than to keep in touch. Most users have 2 email address. One they use for communication and the other they use when signing up to anything online. But that is slowly about to change.

Facebook Connect is not available on over a million websites where you don’t need to create a separate account for that particular website. All you need to do is “Sign in with Facebook”. And if you are already logged onto Facebook on another tab. All it takes is a click. I

So then why do we need e-mail address when messages can be sent via Facebook. Only the corporate world I guess. But since Facebook is getting more and more personal. Do we really need a “personal” email address? One positive thing I look forward to is not having to send mails to addresses like funkychickxx124@xxx.com

Next Generation?
I really don’t think when my dad was grooving with his friends they dreamed that their children would be communicating with each other and them with wireless technology and radio waves.
So what about our next generation? Will Facebook be the final social network? Or will it fade away like hi5?
Can Zuckerburg and the boys at Facebook evolve with people lifestyles? Or is the expiration date of Facebook getting closer?
